SENEGAL Surftrip

Whenever you travel to a new country, you have that excitement of what you are going to find, its smells, culture, people, etc.

Arriving at dawn we found an empty and lifeless Dakar until when we got up and left the hotel we found a world full of life, from fishermen in their boats starting their work to Senegalese people doing their training on the beach.

In the afternoons you can see the entire beach full of those small stalls where you can taste their fresh grilled fish, simply irresistible and cheap. Although I have to say that their local fish Lotte took all the awards and we couldn’t stop eating it.

Its people are really friendly, although sometimes they are a little pushy when it comes to selling you something, but don’t forget to haggle over the price since it is almost a national sport.

There is something beautiful about these people and is that they are happy with nothing, and seeing how the beach was full of children with broken surfboards and they still enjoyed themselves, is something that is really missing today in many of our countries.

Here in Senegal I could see the essence of surfing itself, I could see children simply connecting with the ocean, smiling and spending time with friends, sliding along the shore with half a surfboard and taking advantage of every last ray of sun.

Whenever you arrive in a new country and enter its waters for the first time, you feel a tingling sensation in your stomach until you take your first wave, feel its power and enjoy its quality. And your first wave in a new destination is always etched into your memory forever.

I have to say that the locals are quite nice since we started talking about where I came from, etc. and they began to tell me when the best conditions were available according to tide, swell, etc. And always remember wherever you go, respect its people and be kind, this will open many doors for you.

Its reefs are mostly rock and full of sea urchins so be careful when you enter the ocean or they will leave all their love under your foot.

There are all types of waves, reefbreaks, sandbreaks, others with good sections for good carvings, tubes, etc. My first wave was at Secret which I loved as it is a very easy and playful right and left. The rest of the time I spent it at Ngor right, which although it was not perfect, I did see all the potential it has on a good day of surfing.

In short, it is a very interesting destination to disconnect from your life and go surfing good waves and eat delicious fish.
